Who is Miss Mills?

Updated: Jun 7, 2021

Hello there!

Welcome to my blog, Measuring the Mole. I really hope someone besides me finds this useful, but if not I am most likely going to continue to blog anyway.

This is a platform for me to delve into Science Education even further, whether its exploring fun science in the world around us, analysing pedagogy from my training/EduTwitter or just sharing my views on some problems in teaching / STEM / the world.

I'm a firm believer in the "knowledge is power" mentality, and I plan on using this blog to educate myself and others as much as I possibly can.

"The best advice I ever got was that knowledge is power and to keep reading" ~ David Bailey

I have been very lucky in my life in receiving an absolutely top-notch education. In this blog post I am going to delve into my background and explain how I have ended up where I am today (in a nice, simple, concise-ish, bullet point list 👍).

It all starts at some (unspecified) point in the 90s......:

  • My parents, a physics teacher and a mathematician / management consultant, are two of the most intelligent people I know. I was already off to a great start!

  • I went to the same independent girls school from reception ➡️ upper sixth and absolutely loved it. My love of STEM started at some point in primary school (or before?) and continues to grow every day.

  • During this time I was a classic, constantly busy, teenage perfectionist and threw myself into extra-curriculars including swimming, music and drama.

  • I ended up taking Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry A Levels and applying to Natural Science courses at various unis, mainly because I could not decide which of my A Levels I loved the most!

  • I got pooled to Newnham College, Cambridge (for which I am forever grateful) and read Physical Natural Science. In my 3 years there I studied Maths, Physics, Material Science and Chemistry, eventually specialising in Physical/Theoretical Chemistry in my final year.

  • During my 3rd year I applied for my first teaching job and got it!

  • This job included teacher training and so I studied for my PGCE (with QTS) with the University of Buckingham.

  • And that leads us to right now, a new(ish) Teacher of Chemistry looking forward to her career in Education!

There are so many reasons I love to teach, the main one being that helping others learn is the best possible motivation to get out of bed every morning. It constantly makes me approach the day with a positive attitude and a lot of hope. I like to think we're all here for a reason, and if I can do half as good as a job as some of my teachers did with me, I'll be a very content educator.

That's it for now, I'm sure I will continue to talk about myself on here or on twitter, but I'm hoping this blog will mainly help myself, students, teachers and generally humans, understand the world around us better!
